We in the UK really had an aversion to putting the engines of our aircraft in pods under the wings like the rest of the world didn’t we?
The VC10, Trident and BAC 1-11 exhibited here put the engines at the back of the fuselage, the Comet embedded the engines into the wing, and when we did put engines in pods under the wing on the BAe-146, we put the wings on the roof!
What would have been a typical scene in the late 1960’s at Heathrow Airport; a BAC 1-11, a Hawker Siddeley Trident and a Vickers VC10 all ready to depart with their national and international services, the 1-11 being on a domestic service within the UK, the Trident to somewhere in the near continent, and the VC10 being prepared for a long-distance or transatlantic service.
Days once common now sadly memories.
