Class 52 ‘Western’

Flagship of the Diesel-Hydraulic fleet, the Class 52 ‘Western’ locomotives were among the most popular and efficient engine designs to replace steam in the 1960’s, but within 20 years they’d all have gone, succumb to the moving tide of standardization.


Seen basking in the sun at Swanwick Junction is preserved Class 52 Western D1048 ‘Western Lady’, which is currently awaiting restoration.
