Class 390

Built to replace the ageing fleet of AC locomotives on the West Coast Mainline, the Class 390 was the first train to bring routine tilting services onto the railway since the failed tests of the APT in 1986

Sporting the strange new Virgin Trains ‘Azuma’ livery is Class 390, 390039, seen working an early morning stopping service at Tamworth in snowy conditions.

The livery is to bring the company colours in line with the new Class 800 units which are to be introduced on the East Coast Mainline from December 2018.

As such, the Class 390’s are starting to get themselves the interesting new nickname of ‘Albinolino’s’ thanks to their overall white colours.

Not what I was expecting.

Timing was very much on my side apparently as I’d originally only intended to snap an exposure shot of the southbound train, when all of a sudden a northbound express blasted through the station just as I took the shot, making for this very festive crossover.

Here we see two Virgin Pendolinos passing one another during a snowstorm at Lichfield Trent Valley.

This shot was something of an accidental success, with the cab and front being crisp and sharp, whilst the rest of the surrounding unit is blurred by motion.

But still, here we have Virgin Trains Class 390, 390135 ‘City of Lancaster’, racing north with a train from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street.
