Sporting the strange new Virgin Trains ‘Azuma’ livery is Class 390, 390039, seen working an early morning stopping service at Tamworth in snowy conditions.
The livery is to bring the company colours in line with the new Class 800 units which are to be introduced on the East Coast Mainline from December 2018.
As such, the Class 390’s are starting to get themselves the interesting new nickname of ‘Albinolino’s’ thanks to their overall white colours.

Timing was very much on my side apparently as I’d originally only intended to snap an exposure shot of the southbound train, when all of a sudden a northbound express blasted through the station just as I took the shot, making for this very festive crossover.

To celebrate Christmas 2015, Virgin Trains have outshopped Class 390, 390013, in a curious blue livery with Penguins on the side, affectionately dubbed the ‘Penguinlino’. The same has also been done on Virgin’s East Coast franchise with a Class 91 and InterCity 225 set.
Here the set is seen at Birmingham New Street, shortly after arrival from London Euston.

This shot was something of an accidental success, with the cab and front being crisp and sharp, whilst the rest of the surrounding unit is blurred by motion.
But still, here we have Virgin Trains Class 390, 390135 ‘City of Lancaster’, racing north with a train from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street.
